This fabulous Sci-Fi/Horror movie poster arrived and I found it to be in fair-good condition overall, not too bad but certainly a candidate for restoration.
There was paper loss around the borders and also some on the face of the poster itself. There were many tears throughout and some paper loss and tatters along the fold lines and edges of the poster and some ‘extra’ creases throughout.
The first job was to give it some long term protection, so into the de-acidifying bath which neutralizes the acidic papers with magnesium oxide. This was followed by a bleach bath which does not disturb the vintage paper patina but kills the mould spoors and other pollutants that can slowly destroy vintage paper and are often that are not visible to the eye.
Now on to linen and we leave it for a few days to dry.
The next process is hand restoration where I needed to replace the missing paper, some light air brushing using a blend of Synchromatic transparent aniline (water colors) mixed with Golden conservation colors to make the tattered borders flush/even looking.
